First Aid Training Overview First aid training is a requirement of the Department for Education for all teachers and school support staff, and is a vital part of student safety and wellbeing. While HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support is the minimum first aid requirement for the Department for Education, designated first aiders must complete HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting. Those seeking employment who hold a current HLTAID003 Provide first aid qualification can complete the Asthma and Anaphylaxis course to meet requirements. First aid training needs may vary depending on role and school- specific requirements. Education and student wellbeing go hand-in-hand. Positive wellbeing is linked to higher engagement with learning and a good education has been associated with better wellbeing across the lifespan 1 . A common impact on student wellbeing is bullying, and in 2020, this unfortunately extends beyond the school yard. Children are becoming more connected online, with 1 in 3 children aged between 8-13 years using social media 2 . As a result, young people are at risk of online bullying, increasing their likelihood of poor academic performance and mental health concerns 2 . As educators, training in Mental Health First Aid can be the difference in providing support to students before any mental health concerns can develop and impact ongoing wellbeing. Emerging issues

First Aid Products Overview Having the right first aid products available to students, staff and visitors at your education facility is essential. SafeWork Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice stipulates the required type and quantity of first aid equipment in different settings to meet minimum requirements.

First Aid Kits • First aid kits for all school and office environments • Various sizes and applications including wallmounts • Durable design including soft and hard shells • Fully customised options available • Waterproof kit

The Department for Education also specifies the number and type of first aid kits and modules that must be present, depending on the school environment.

Emerging issues

First Aid Supplies All first aid kit items can be purchased separately. Various items also available in bulk • Reusable hot and cold packs • Specialised snake bite bandages with tension indicator • Sunscreen, aloe vera gel and hand sanitiser • Emesis (vomit) bags • Disposable asthma spacers

A common concern in the school setting is the occurrence of bites and stings from various insects and animals. Depending on the geographical location of your school, there may be different risks to consider, such as snake bite treatment. A University of Melbourne study found that South Australia had the highest rate of fatal bites and stings over the surveyed period 3 . Bee stings presented the highest risk of hospitalisation, followed by spider and snake bites 3 . In addition to treating the bite or sting itself, it is important to consider that some individuals may have an allergic reaction. It is essential to have the necessary first aid products on hand for such eventualities.

First Aid Drills Regular first aid drills keep you and your team response-ready in between first aid courses. A St John trainer will visit your school and run first aid scenarios with your staff. Our first aid drills are fully customisable and can be scheduled throughout the year. First Aid in Schools See pages 10-11 for more information about this FREE program. Event Health Services (e.g. at sports days)

In addition to the day-to-day first aid requirements of an education environment, further support may be required for larger school events, such as fetes and sports days. Given the large number of students and additional spectators, this presents a higher risk for injuries and the need for first aid intervention. Booking St John Event Health Services for your next school event will ensure you have highly trained and equipped St John volunteers looking out for the wellbeing of your staff, students and visitors. You can then get on with enjoying the day, knowing the school community is in safe hands.

FAIS 11 The FAiS program is provided free of charge to schools and students, and in addition to gaining invaluable knowledge and skills, each child will receive a gift bag with contents that encourage learning retention and engagement with the first aid topic.

First Aid in Schools

Overview

The First Aid in Schools (FAiS) program provides free first aid education to South Australian primary school children. Tailored to suit each year level, a qualified St John First Aid Trainer will come to your school to teach students a range of vital first aid skills. Each session ranges from 30 to 90 minutes and can be adjusted to suit the age of the students and your school’s lesson times. It is recommended that students go through the FAiS program each year to refresh their skills and build on their knowledge.

The program is specifically designed with the kids’ learning in mind. It is interactive, fun and promises to impart a key set of skills that will empower young people with the ability to act in case of an emergency. Since commencement in 2013, St John SA has taught more than 80,000 South Australian primary school students the lifesaving skills of first aid. How to get involved

Emerging issues

What’s in it for the kids... Lifesaving skills: • How to call an ambulance • Danger assessments and personal safety - what to look out for and what to do • Dealingwith an unconscious person Reports from St John First Aid in Schools Trainers have demonstrated that the benefits of students participating in the program are undeniable. For students residing in lower socioeconomic areas, this has been particularly apparent. Reports indicate these children are likely to be exposed to more violence and more situations where first aid intervention may be needed. The program has been able to empower these children with the skills and knowledge to help a family member or friend in distress and respond in a calm way.

It is almost a certainty that at some stage we will all be presented with a scenario that requires first aid treatment. Whether that be a need for personal treatment, or aiding a friend, a family member or indeed a stranger: Having first aid knowledge and skills could mean the difference between life and death. FAiS is one of our many charitable programs and is funded through our commercial activity, generous sponsors and donations.

Overview Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. Both children and adults can suffer a cardiac arrest, which makes it imperative for any educational institution to be prepared with the right training and equipment to deal with this situation. Early CPR and early access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) are vital for providing a chance at survival. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by 10% 4 .

4 American Heart Association 2000, ECC Guidelines Part 4: The Automated External Defibrillator, .

Emerging issues

Genetic heart conditions, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, can be present in children and adults and go undiagnosed for years. This condition involves a thickening of the heart walls, making it difficult for blood to be pumped around the body. It usually presents few symptoms, and can sadly cause sudden death through cardiac arrest. Luckily for 10-year-old Lewis Wilson, he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy prior to having a cardiac arrest, meaning his parents were already equipped with an AED at all times and saved his life 5 . Although it is not a common condition, its lack of symptoms shows just another reason why it is so important for schools to have access to this lifesaving equipment in case of an unexpected emergency. 5 Elg, H 2019, ‘Why this 10-year-old boy had open heart surgery’, The Courier, 28 July 2019,
