First Aid Training Overview As a requirement of Safe Work Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice, construction and trade industry workers must have a minimum number of qualified first aiders (dependent on the nature of the work or workplace). There should be one first aider for: 50 workers in low-risk workplaces (for example, an office) 25 workers in high-risk workplaces (for example, a construction site) 10 workers in remote high-risk workplaces (for example, a mine). St John SA offers a range of courses specifically suited to the construction and trades industry including, Low Voltage Rescue and Remote Area First Aid. All courses are available as group on-site trainings or for individual bookings.

Emerging issues

Across Australia, one construction worker every two days is lost to suicide. This adds up to more than 190 suicide cases in the construction industry per year. According to the Australian Men’s Health Forum, construction industry workers have higher risk of suicide (53%) when compared to employed men across different industries in Australia. These staggering numbers highlight the seriousness of mental health conditions in the workplace and the importance of providing adequate support. St John SA offers a Mental Health First Aid course that teaches the skills to understand and identify colleagues who may be experiencing issues with their mental health.

First Aid Products

Overview

Along with first aid training, it is vital to have the right first aid products available, for not only your workers, but contractors, subcontractors and visitors. The construction and trades industry must meet the minimum requirements as outlined in Safe Work Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice for first aid equipment available. Dependent on whether the staff are working outdoors or in regional or remote areas, this will determine the type of first aid kits and modules that should be available on work sites or in vehicles.

SOLUTIONS 9 Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. The construction industry is one of the most physically demanding and high-risk work environments. Due to the physical demands of the job, construction workers are seen to be at a higher risk of experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest. Automated external defibrillators are safe and easy to use by any person, with or without training. St John SA has a broad range of models, and we can advise you on which model works best for your needs.

Why everyworkplace should consider having an AED Each year in Australia, approximatley 25,000 people experience an out of hospital sudden cardiac arrest with less than 10% surviving. Early CPR and defibrillation in the first few minutes increases the chances of survival to as much as 70%. Having access to an AED on-site could mean the difference between life and death. AED’s do not require training to operate with fully automated models available that voice prompt you through the CPR and defibrillation process. Defibrillators Overview Is your construction site prepared for a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)? Having an automated external defibrillator on-site can mean the difference between life and death in a SCA emergency. While there are no current laws to having a defibrillator at a workplace, chances of survival decrease by 10% every minute without CPR and defibrillation. Therefore, having a defibrillator on-site makes a real difference in the crucial time until the ambulance arrives. The St John Defibrillator A defibrillator may look intimidating to someone who may not know much about them. But early CPR, combined with early access to a defibrillator and early access to emergency medical attention gives patients the best chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest. Make sure the AED you choose for your site delivers the most important features to help ensure a successful rescue. Launched in 2021, the St John Defibrillator is the AED you want for your workplace. Simple, effective and ready to use, the St John Defibrillator is designed for first-time responders as well as experienced rescuers. With the combination of advanced technology, Intellisense CPR (ICPR) offers real-time guideline- driven CPR feedback to ensure that all rescuers can deliver high- quality CPR to help save the life of a sudden cardiac arrest victim. You’ll feel confident and equipped with a St John Defibrillator.
