In 2021, first aid training is changing. The national regulator for Australia’s training organisation has made changes to a number of first aid units of competency to reflect industry best practice, expectations and current regulation. These changes relate to content delivery and assessment of first aid training; ensuring students are competent in the application of essential skills and knowledge required for relevant first aid situations. Throughout 2021, St John SA will be transitioning to these new packages to ensure we continue to provide the most up-to-date and current training experience for our learners. For the most recent information regarding this transition, visit stjohnsa.com.au. First Aid Training Update

Emerging issues

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment in schools is important, as it helps reduce the risk of the spread of germs between students, teachers and visitors. PPE equipment recommended for use in schools includes: • Face masks

Did you know that peanut allergies are the most common cause of food- related anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis can be defined as a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. School children often share food in the school yard, heightening the risk of anaphylaxis emergencies. It is important to note the symptoms of anaphylaxis to include swelling of the throat and tongue, difficulty breathing and talking, a persistent cough and hypotension. The most effective way to treat anaphylaxis is the use of an EpiPen. An EpiPen contains a single dose of adrenaline and is designed as a first aid device for use by people without formal medical or nursing training. It is important for teachers and students to be prepared with the correct skills and equipment for all first aid scenarios in schools.

• Hand sanitiser • Surface wipes

These can be purchased through the St John shop by emailing supplies@stjohnsa.com.au.

PPE Offer: 20% off selected items: Aero Surgical Face Masks (pack of 50), St John Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser (500mL) and St John Surface Wipes (tub of 75).

Is your school First Aid compliant?

Safe Work Australia has written the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice, which stipulates minimum first aid requirements for Australian workplaces. All schools must meet minimum requirements for numbers of qualified first aiders on-site. Similarly, the number and type of first aid kits and equipment required will be determined by the Workplace Risk Rating and the number of employees at your school. St John offers complimentary risk assessments at all SA schools to determine the first aid training, products and equipment required to meet compliance standards. We will provide you with a no-obligation comprehensive report.

See the Workplace Service tab on our website at stjohnsa.com.au

We examine your stock levels and quality of contents, check expiry dates and restock accordingly to meet WHS regulations. We also include an inventory list and audit date (as required by Safe Work’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice), and attach a service label indicating the next due date.

FAiS 11 The FAiS program is complimentary for primary schools and students, and in addition to gaining vital knowledge and skills, each child will receive take-home resources that encourage engagement with the first aid topic.

First Aid in Schools

Overview

Teacher’s quick thinking saves student’s life Each session ranges from 30 to 90 minutes and is flexible to suit the age of the students and lesson times. It is suggested that students undertake the FAiS program annually in order to refresh skills. 12-year-old Deakin Hawke was bitten by a brown snake during his year six camp in Canberra. Paramedics credit Deakin’s teacher for administering the necessary first aid that saved his life. If it wasn’t for his teachers being skilled in relevant, up to date first aid training, the outcome could have been very different for Deakin. St John offers a number of first aid kits and supplies available for these types of emergencies: • Bites and stings kits, great for camping or outdoor activities • Personal leisure kits, to have around the home • Premium compression bandages, specifically for snake bites Adequate training and the right first aid supplies could save a life! What’s in it for the kids... Lifesaving skills: • How to call an ambulance • Danger assessments and personal safety – what to look out for and what to do • Dealingwith an unconscious person • How to treat bites and stings • What to dowhen someone is choking St John provides complimentary first aid education to South Australian primary school children through its First Aid in Schools (FAiS) program. This course is tailored to suit each individual year level, with a qualified St John First Aid Trainer coming to your school to teach students vital first aid skills. https://7news.com.au/sunrise/on-the-show/teachers-quick-thinking-saves-student-after- deadly-snake-bite-on-school-camp-c-601494?fbclid

The program is specifically designed with the kids’ learning in mind. It is interactive, fun and communicates key skills that will empower young people with the ability to act in case of an emergency. Since commencement in 2013, St John SA has taught more than 85,000 South Australian primary school students the lifesaving skills of first aid.

Overview Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. Both children and adults can experience cardiac arrest without any pre-existing conditions, making it vital for educational institutions to be prepared with the essential training and equipment to manage this situation. Early CPR and early access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) are vital for providing a chance at survival. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by 10%.

A life saved

It is often thought that cardiac arrest only impacts those who are elderly or have a heart condition. Realistically, anyone can suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. An eight-year-old boy from Sydney’s northern beaches was saved by his quick-thinking teacher when he took a fall in the school yard in May 2020. The year 3 student tripped on a tree root and hit his head causing him to go into cardiac arrest. His school was thankfully equipped with an AED, meaning his teacher was able to restart his heart and ultimately save his life with the device. The chance of surviving a cardiac arrest decreases by 10% every 60 seconds without an AED. https://au.news.yahoo.com/boy-8-fighting-for-life-after-fall-at-sydney-school-030244938.html?
