First Aid Training Overview Did you know that workplaces need to have a certain number of qualified first aiders? Low-risk workplace – one first aider for every 50 workers High-risk workplace – one first aider for every 25 workers Remote high-risk workplace – one first aider for every 10 workers It’s important for nominated first aiders to attend regular training to refresh their skills and knowledge, so they can provide effective first aid when needed. We recommend that first aiders receive refresher CPR training annually and renew their first aid qualifications every three years.

Each year, 190 construction industry workers in Australia take their own lives, resulting in a loss of one worker every second day. 1 The statistics reveal a stark reality: construction workers face a suicide risk six times higher than the risk of workplace accidents. Moreover, young construction workers are more than twice as likely to take their own lives compared to other young Australian men. 2 St John SA offers a Mental Health First Aid course that teaches the skills to understand and identify colleagues who may be experiencing issues with their mental health. For full course details, please refer to the course flyer on our website.

First Aid Products

Overview

In tandem with first aid training, it is essential to ensure the availability of appropriate first aid products for workers, contractors, subcontractors and visitors in the construction and trades sector. Meeting Safe Work Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice is crucial for adhering to minimum requirements. The required type of first aid kits and modules depends on whether staff work outdoors or in regional or remote areas. This dictates the necessary provisions on work sites or in vehicles.

The increasing availability of defibrillators throughout Australia is a valuable resource for individuals who experience sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting. In Australia, around 25,000 people experience this condition each year, with as few as 5% surviving to be discharged from hospital. 3 In South Australia alone, only 1 in 10 people affected by cardiac arrest survive. 4 The chances of survival drop by 10% per minute without access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), which is why having an AED available is crucial. 5

SOLUTIONS 9 Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. The construction industry is one of the most physically demanding and high-risk work environments. Due to the physical demands of the job, construction workers are seen to be at a higher risk of experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest. Automated external defibrillators are safe and easy to use by any person, with or without training. St John SA has a broad range of models, and we can advise you on which model works best for your needs.

Defibrillators Overview

Is your workplace prepared for a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)? SCA is a leading cause of death worldwide, and the only definitive treatment is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) shock. Prioritising workplace preparedness with the right training and equipment can increase the chances of survival in sudden cardiac arrest situations. Lifesaving legislation: SA leads the way The South Australian Government has taken a momentous step towards safeguarding lives by passing the Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022, introduced by Hon Frank Pangallo MLC. 6 Under this legislation, public buildings and select private properties must install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), ensuring greater preparedness in the face of cardiac arrest emergencies. Schools, libraries, sports facilities, retirement villages, and larger commercial buildings are all included in this vital requirement.

The following model is recommended by St John SA for a range of environments.

When you least expect it… In February 2023, Dylan Holmes, a 42-year-old workshop operator in Mackay, Queensland, experienced a sudden cardiac arrest while working overtime at an industrial site. Initially presumed dehydrated due to the hot weather, his colleagues quickly realised he wasn’t breathing and had no pulse. Nine shocks were administered using a defibrillator between the workshop and the Mackay Base Hospital. Reflecting on the incident, Mr. Holmes shared, “The ambulance lady said that if [my workplace] didn’t have a defibrillator, I wouldn’t be alive now... It’s surprising, the number of places that don’t have them - they’re not that expensive, and in this day and age, it’s a no-brainer.” Readily available AEDs prove invaluable during emergencies, reassuring workers that their employers are equipped to respond swiftly. Investing in AEDs stands as a critical safety measure for any business, ensuring the well-being of individuals within their care.
