First Aid Products Overview It is vital to have the right first aid products available to students, staff and visitors at your education facility. SafeWork Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice states the type and quantity of essential first aid equipment necessary in different settings in order to meet the minimum requirements. The Department for Education also specifies the number and type of first aid kits and modules that must be present, depending on the school environment. Four-year-old Hadley Webb suffered food-related anaphylaxis after consuming a muesli bar containing peanuts. His mother, Kath Webb, who was also his teacher, used an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen) on her son after he vomited and loss consciousness. Kath’s anaphylaxis training kicked in as she knew the systems that supplied blood and oxygen to her son’s heart and lungs were deteriorating rapidly. She instructed her colleague to phone 000 and Kath raced to the Kindy’s first aid kit and grabbed the EpiPen. Kath formed a fist around the EpiPen, pulled the blue safety release off and firmly pressed the orange end to Hadley’s outer thigh. She pushed down hard and kept holding it there until she felt the device click, only releasing the pressure after she had slowly counted to three. To Kath’s relief, colour and warmth began returning to her son’s body as ambulance officers arrived. Fortunately, Hadley made a full recovery. Adequate training and the right first aid supplies could save a life! It is important for teachers and students to be prepared with the correct skills and equipment for all first aid scenarios in schools. Kindy Teacher saves own son after reaction to peanuts

SOLUTIONS FREE Workplace Assessments Our first aid advisors will visit your school, assess it against SafeWork Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice requirements and make recommendations based on their assessment – completely free of charge. Customised Information Sessions Learn about topics relevant to your school’s specific circumstances, such as common medical conditions including diabetes, asthma and anaphylaxis. First Aid Drills Regular first aid drills keep you and your team response-ready in between first aid courses. A St John Trainer will visit your school and run first aid scenarios with your staff. Our first aid drills can be tailored and can be scheduled throughout the year at a time that suits you. First Aid in Schools See pages 10 - 11 for more information about this FREE program. Event Health Services (e.g. at sports days) Book St John for your school events – from school fetes to sports days, our Event Health Services team will look after the health and wellbeing of your students, staff and visitors. Restocking Services We examine your stock levels and quality of contents, check expiry dates and restock accordingly to meet WHS regulations. We also include an inventory list and audit date (as required by Safe Work’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice), and attach a service label indicating the next due date.

In addition to the day-to-day first aid requirements of an education environment, further support may be required for larger school events, such as fetes and sports days. Given the large number of students and additional spectators, this presents a higher risk for injuries and the need for first aid intervention. Booking St John Event Health Services for your next school event will ensure you have highly trained and equipped St John volunteers looking out for the wellbeing of your staff, students and visitors. You can then get on with enjoying the day, knowing the school community is in safe hands. Overview

The FAiS program is complimentary for schools and students, and in addition to gaining vital knowledge and skills, each child will receive a gift bag with contents that encourage engagement with the first aid topic.

St John First Aid in Schools program continues to save lives Each session ranges from 30 to 90 minutes and is flexible to suit the age of the students and lesson times. It is suggested that students undertake the FAiS program annually in order to refresh skills. “I learnt it in our first aid sessions we did at school with Helen.” Year 1 student, Kaley from Mallala Primary School attended our First Aid in Schools program as organised by her school. Just a few weeks later at home, Kaley could see that her father was becoming very ill and soon became unresponsive. She remembered exactly what St John SA Trainer Helen, had taught her in class and responded by alerting her mother and emergency services. Kaley implemented a range of other response checks including breathing and if her father was sweating. Once the ambulance arrived she showed them to her father. Thanks to her recent lesson in lifesaving skills and amazing quick thinking, Kaley’s father has recovered well in hospital since his medical episode. St John provides complimentary first aid education to South Australian primary school children through their First Aid in Schools (FAiS) program. This course is tailored to suit each individual year level, with a qualified St John First Aid Trainer coming to your school to teach students vital first aid skills.

The program is specifically designed with the kids’ learning in mind. It is interactive, fun and communicates key skills that will empower young people with the ability to act in case of an emergency. Since commencement in 2013, St John SA has taught more than 87,000 South Australian primary school students the lifesaving skills of first aid.

Overview Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. Both children and adults can experience cardiac arrest without any pre-existing conditions, making it vital for educational institutions to be prepared with the essential training and equipment to manage this situation. Early CPR and early access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) are vital for providing a chance at survival.
