Learning and wellbeing are closely linked, as children and young people with good wellbeing are more engaged and successful learners. 1 However, one in four young people are at risk of serious mental illness. 2 Schools play an important role in building resilience, and in prevention and intervention.

Thunderstorm asthma can affect anyone, even those without a history of asthma. Most at risk are people with a history of asthma, unrecognised asthma, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), particularly seasonal hay fever, or an allergy to grass pollen. 3

Schools need to be vigilant on days with thunderstorm forecasts and high or extreme pollen count, particularly in late spring or early summer. Having asthma medication and equipment on site can be lifesaving. 3. Asthma Australia (2017), Thunderstorm asthma. FAIS

First Aid in Schools

Overview

The FAiS program is provided free of charge to schools and students, and in addition to gaining invaluable knowledge and skills, each child will receive a gift bag with contents that encourage learning retention and engagement with the first aid topic. The program is specifically designed with the kids’ learning in mind. It is interactive, fun and promises to impart a key set of skills that will empower young people with the ability to act in case of an emergency. Since commencement in 2013, St John SA has taught more than 70,000 South Australian primary school students the lifesaving skills of first aid.

Our free First Aid in Schools (FAiS) program teaches lifesaving first aid skills to primary school children and is available for Reception through to Year 7. Our qualified St John first aid trainers come to your school and deliver a first aid course tailored for children. Class times range from 30 to 90 minutes and are adjusted to suit the children’s ages and your school’s lesson times.

It is almost a certainty that at some stage we will all be presented with a scenario that requires first aid treatment. Whether that be a need for personal treatment, or aiding a friend, a family member or indeed a stranger: Having first aid knowledge and skills could mean the difference between life and death. First Aid in Schools is one of our many charitable programs and is funded through our commercial activity, generous sponsors and donations.

What’s in it for the kids... Lifesaving skills: • How to call an ambulance • Danger assessments and personal safety - what to look out for and what to do • Dealing with an unconscious person • Recovery position demonstration and practice • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (from year 5/6+) • Managing injuries, bleeding and possible fractures • How to treat bites and stings • What to do when someone is choking First aid gift bag: • Interactive first aid workbook • Emergency assistance fridge magnet • Encouragement letter to parents

Cardiac arrest can affect anyone Sudden cardiac arrest can affect patients of all ages. The only definitive treatment is a defibrillator shock, which gives the heart a chance to restore a normal rhythm. If a shock is delivered within 3 to 5 minutes of collapse, survival rates can be as high as 70 per cent. 4 Therefore, having an automated external defibrillator (AED) on-site makes a real difference in the crucial time until the ambulance arrives.
