Cardiac arrest can affect anyone Sudden cardiac arrest can affect patients of all ages. The only definitive treatment is a defibrillator shock, which gives the heart a chance to restore a normal rhythm. If a shock is delivered within 3 to 5 minutes of collapse, survival rates can be as high as 70 per cent. 4 Therefore, having an automated external defibrillator (AED) on-site makes a real difference in the crucial time until the ambulance arrives.
