First Aid Training Overview First aid training is mandatory for teachers and school support staff as per the Department for Education’s guidelines, playing a crucial role in ensuring student safety and wellbeing. The Department for Education recognises HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support as the minimum accepted first aid training for teacher employment. For those in early childhood settings, HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is the recommended choice. Individuals with HLTAID011 Provide First Aid can fulfill this requirement by completing the Asthma and Anaphylaxis course. Regular updates to first aid training are crucial for maintaining current skills and knowledge. Training requirements may vary depending on specific roles and the unique needs of individual schools. In Australia, children’s health is a critical aspect of their overall wellbeing. More and more students are experiencing mental health concerns that affect their learning, such as bullying, which can inflict significant distress on students. 1 In a world where 1 in 4 students aged 8-15 face bullying, the need for effective interventions is more critical than ever. 2 As educators, being trained in Mental Health First Aid can make a crucial difference in offering support to students, equipping individuals with the skills to recognise and understand signs of mental health issues. For full course details, please refer to the course flyer on our website for the Mental Health First Aid course or the Youth Mental Health First Aid course. Emerging Issues

First Aid Products Overview Ensuring the availability of appropriate first aid supplies for students, staff, and visitors in your educational facility is crucial. SafeWork Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice outlines the necessary type and quantity of first aid equipment in various settings, ensuring compliance with minimum requirements. The Department for Education further specifies the number and type of kits/modules for each school environment, ensuring a tailored and comprehensive approach to first aid readiness. When your students are returning to school, make sure you assist in protecting their skin in the following ways: • Slip on clothing that covers as much skin as possible. • Slop on a SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply every 2 hours. • Slap on a hat that protects the face, neck and ears. • Seek shade, particularly when the UV is highest such as during the middle of the day. • Slide on close fitting sunglasses. 3 If a student experiences heat induced illness due to prolonged sun exposure, follow these steps: Implement sun safety in the school yard this summer Strip the patient of as much clothing as possible. If the patient does not improve quickly (within 10 minutes), call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance. Soak the patient with any available water. Fan the patient continuously. Give cold water to the patient to drink if they are fully conscious and able to swallow. 4 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Follow DRSABCD. Lie the patient down in a cool or shaded area.

Overview
Another life saved... What’s in it for the kids... Lifesaving skills: • How to call an ambulance • Danger assessments and personal safety – what to look out for and what to do • Dealing with an unconscious person • How to treat bites and stings • What to do when someone is choking • Recovery position demonstration and practice • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (from year 5/6) • Managing injuries, bleeding and possible fractures Take-home resources: • Interactive first aid workbook • Emergency assistance fridge magnet • Certificate of achievement • Encouragement letter to parents Kaley’s experience underscores the significance of early first aid education in potentially saving lives. By equipping our children with these essential skills, we empower them to act in crises, fostering a resilient and safer community. The little lifesavers we train all across SA can often be the only ones at home in an emergency. Take Kaley, a Year 1 student from Mallala Primary School, who discovered her father unresponsive during a medical episode. Drawing from her first aid training through St John SA’s program, the seven-year-old promptly alerted her mother, Kelly, on a nearby property. Kelly praised Kaley’s composure as she assisted her while contacting emergency services. Guided by her training, Kaley swiftly checked her father’s vital signs and directed paramedics upon their arrival. Reflecting on the incident, Kelly praised Kaley’s maturity, attributing her quick response to the first aid education at Mallala Primary School. Thanks to Kaley’s courage and the support of St John SA’s program, her father made a full recovery. St John provides complimentary first aid education to South Australian primary school children through their First Aid in Schools (FAiS) program. This course is tailored to suit each individual year level, with a qualified St John First Aid Trainer coming to your school to teach students vital first aid skills. Each session ranges from 30 to 90 minutes and is flexible to suit the age of the students and lesson times. It is suggested that students undertake the FAiS program annually in order to refresh skills.
The FAiS program is complimentary for schools and students, and in addition to gaining vital knowledge and skills, each child will receive a gift bag with contents that encourage engagement with the first aid topic. The program is specifically designed with the kids’ learning in mind. It is interactive, fun and communicates key skills that will empower young people with the ability to act in case of an emergency. Since commencement in 2013, St John SA has taught more than 90,000 South Australian primary school students the lifesaving skills of first aid. How to get involved

AEDs
Overview Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. Both children and adults can experience cardiac arrest without any pre-existing conditions, making it vital for educational institutions to be prepared with the essential training and equipment to manage this situation. Early CPR and early access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) are vital for providing a chance at survival.
Lifesaving legislation: SA leads the way
The South Australian Government has taken a momentous step towards safeguarding lives by passing the Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022, introduced by Hon Frank Pangallo MLC. 6 Under this legislation, public buildings and select private properties must install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), ensuring greater preparedness in the face of cardiac arrest emergencies. Schools, libraries, sports facilities, retirement villages, and larger commercial buildings are all included in this vital requirement.
Survival rates for cardiac arrest victims can be significantly improved with the presence of AEDs. St John SA stands ready to assist you in meeting these defibrillator requirements. Protect your community and demonstrate your commitment to safety, because every second counts. Scan the QR code to view the legislation.
