First Aid Training

Overview First aid training is mandatory for teachers and school support staff as per the Department for Education’s guidelines, playing a crucial role in ensuring student safety and wellbeing. The Department for Education recognises HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support as the minimum accepted first aid training for teacher employment. For those in early childhood settings, HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is the recommended choice. Individuals with HLTAID011 Provide First Aid can fulfill this requirement by completing the Asthma and Anaphylaxis course. Regular updates to first aid training are crucial for maintaining current skills and knowledge. Training requirements may vary depending on specific roles and the unique needs of individual schools.

Beyond the routine first aid needs in educational settings, additional assistance becomes imperative for larger school events like fetes and sports days. Opting for St John Health and Medical Services for your upcoming school event ensures the presence of highly trained and equipped St John team members dedicated to safeguarding the wellbeing of your staff, students, and visitors. Each event undergoes a thorough risk assessment, tailoring the coverage to the specific requirements—whether it be our Event Medic team members for general assistance or our Ambulance Officers and Health Care Professionals, such as Paramedics and Nurses, for more comprehensive medical support. This way, you can immerse yourself in the enjoyment of the day, confident that the school community is in secure and capable hands.

AEDs

Overview:

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. Both children and adults can experience cardiac arrest without any pre-existing conditions, making it vital for educational institutions to be prepared with the essential training and equipment to manage this situation. Early CPR and early access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) are vital for providing a chance at survival.

All schools are required to have an AED The South Australian Government is leading the way in saving lives from sudden cardiac arrest by mandating AEDs in certain buildings, facilities and vehicles across South Australia.

Buildings, facilities and emergency service vehicles owned by the Crown are now required to comply with this legislation, including applicable schools. Failure to comply will attract penalties.

Non-Crown owned buildings, facilities and vehicles have until 1 January 2026 to comply.

All schools will be required to have one AED, but schools should consider their individual campus requirements and ability to access this lifesaving device quickly in an emergency.

St John SA can help you determine the best solution for your school community.

Solutions

Why Have an AED? • Increases Survival Rates: AEDs significantly boost survival chances during sudden cardiac arrest. • User-Friendly: Modern AEDs provide simple, clear instructions for non-medical users. • Quick Response: Early defibrillation is crucial—survival rates drop by 10% for every minute without defibrillation. Tips for Buying an AED • Automatic vs Semi-Automatic: Choose between fully automatic or semi-automatic models based on your needs. • Child Pads: For the school environment, consider AEDs with child pads or pediatric settings.
