BOUT ST JOHN AMBULANCE SA
St John Ambulance SA (St John SA) is a self-funded, non-profit, humanitarian organisation that cares for the wellbeing of all South Australians through the provision of first aid at events, first aid training and products, youth development and community care social inclusion programs. Our organisation is governed by a Board of Directors who are responsible to the members for the performance of the incorporated association, ensuring St John SA is appropriately managed and provides leading first aid and community services consistent with the culture and values of The Order of St John. The day-to-day management of the organisation is overseen by the Chief Executive Officer, supported by the Executive Leadership Team, staff and volunteers. St John SA have over 100 paid staff and 800 volunteer members who make everything we do at St John possible. The St John property portfolio in South Australia includes 28 properties that house divisions and commercial training, 40 adult divisions and 19 cadet divisions. Currently we are unaware of any paid staff that identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and we have less than 10 volunteer members who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation and span operational and non-operational Event Health Services roles, Community Care, Youth Development, Historical Society, Band and more. Volunteer
members also operate within a leadership framework to ensure information, support and resources are adequately distributed to our volunteer cohorts. We deliver our first aid and community services across a diverse range of communities in South Australia and seek out opportunities to work with and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. • Developing educational programmes and other services specific to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. • Consult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on the development of policy and future directions of the organisation. • Actively recruit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as volunteers of the Operations and Community Care branches. • Appropriate contractual tender arrangements, sourcing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owned businesses and suppliers on a needs basis. • Actively participating in reconciliation activities within the broader community. • Promoting reconciliation through all facets of the organisation including education, development of policy and collaborative relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations such as health providers, suppliers and Ochre Dawn. This is done through:

UR VISION FOR RECONCILIATION
As we work in a spirit of reconciliation towards a more diverse and inclusive St John SA, we recognise the need to actively develop and nurture an organisational culture and workforce that is representative of the whole South Australian community. Seeking direct involvement and partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities across all levels of St John SA is part of this vision for reconciliation. Beginning with reflecting as an organisation on our cultural inclusivity, we will provide educational opportunities to all members to better understand the history and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. We will ensure all employees and volunteers understand and embrace To support this vision, we have established the St John SA Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group (RWG). The group works to identify and document actionable outcomes to areas where St John SA can improve and develop its reconciliation activities. Our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan has emerged from this group, aiming to address the areas of relationships, respect, opportunities and governance in relation to reconciliation. We are committed to sharing our skills and knowledge in first aid and social support with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and communities and embrace opportunities to learn and understand the concept of reconciliation, and apply these principles in their daily work and interactions.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and promote a better understanding of our shared history among our staff and members.
This collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our community will enable us to:
• Contribute towards the journey of reconciliation through the development of policy, representation on committees and increased diversity of our volunteers in the Operations and Community Care branches. • Create an understanding of the importance of culture, respect and reconciliation and their interrelationships with the values of the organisation. • Identify needs that complement services provided by the organisation to ensure services are appropriately directed to the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. • Develop positive relationships where the organisation is seen as an example of
inclusiveness, embraced and promoted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait people and communities.
We invite everyone who is part of St John SA to join us in embracing our Reconciliation Action Plan, to think about the role you can play and to develop your own personal commitment to reconciliation.

The Artwork by Ngarrindjeri artist Jordan Lovegrove shows St John Ambulance SA on the path of their reconciliation journey. The large meeting place is St John Ambulance SA on their reconciliation journey, which is represented by the pathway going through the artwork. St John values of teamwork, integrity, high quality services, diversity and respect are shown by the 5 elements surrounding the large meeting place. The smaller meeting places linking to the main pathway are different people and communities St John Ambulance SA will be connecting with and helping along their reconciliation journey.
This was a Youth Development program run collaboratively between the 3rd Health Support Battalion (3 HSB) and St John Ambulance SA as part of a wider health outreach program which was specifically designed to support the Aboriginal community of Port Augusta. St John SA provided the qualification Apply First Aid to a group of nine year 11 and 12 Aboriginal students from the Port Augusta Secondary School as part of the youth development program. This qualification assisted in providing points towards their year 12 certificates. All nine students have an interest in a career in either nursing or paramedics.
St John Ambulance SA were proud to attend the Annual National Reconciliation Week Breakfast at the Adelaide Convention Centre, to launch National Reconciliation Week in South Australia. As our first time attending and alongside 1,700 other guests, we were excited to have the opportunity to recognise the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their history and culture, and acknowledge them as traditional owners of our land.
Aboriginal Spirit Colour Fun Run & Walk 2021 organised by Nunkuwarrin Yunti. Nunkuwarrin Yunti recognises that exposure to tobacco smoke is a health risk and recognises the negative impact smoking has on the health of the Aboriginal community. The Aboriginal Spirit Colour Fun Run & Walk 2021 is one of the many ways that Nunkuwarrin Yunti encourages people to be more physically active as part of quitting smoking and working towards being healthy.
