First Aid Products Overview It is vital to have the right first aid products available to students, staff and visitors at your education facility. SafeWork Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice states the type and quantity of essential first aid equipment necessary in different settings in order to meet the minimum requirements. The Department for Education also specifies the number and type of first aid kits and modules that must be present, depending on the school environment. Four-year-old Hadley Webb suffered food-related anaphylaxis after consuming a muesli bar containing peanuts. His mother, Kath Webb, who was also his teacher, used an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen) on her son after he vomited and loss consciousness. Kath’s anaphylaxis training kicked in as she knew the systems that supplied blood and oxygen to her son’s heart and lungs were deteriorating rapidly. She instructed her colleague to phone 000 and Kath raced to the Kindy’s first aid kit and grabbed the EpiPen. Kath formed a fist around the EpiPen, pulled the blue safety release off and firmly pressed the orange end to Hadley’s outer thigh. She pushed down hard and kept holding it there until she felt the device click, only releasing the pressure after she had slowly counted to three. To Kath’s relief, colour and warmth began returning to her son’s body as ambulance officers arrived. Fortunately, Hadley made a full recovery. Adequate training and the right first aid supplies could save a life! It is important for teachers and students to be prepared with the correct skills and equipment for all first aid scenarios in schools. Kindy Teacher saves own son after reaction to peanuts
