First Aid Products South Australian councils must comply with Safe Work Australia’s requirements for first aid equipment and facilities. The specific type of first aid kits and additional modules vary based on the type of work and location. Overview:
Emerging issues: The increasing availability of defibrillators in Australia is a valuable resource for those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital. Annually, around 25,000 Australians experience this condition, with only about 10% surviving to hospital discharge and/or 30 days. 2 In South Australia, the survival rate is 1 in 10. 3 The chances of survival drop by 10% per minute without access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), making the availability of AEDs crucial. 4 References: 2 Heart Foundation, What is a cardiac arrest?, 2024 3 SA Ambulance Service, Restart a Heart, 27 September 2022 4 Restart a Heart, Restart a Heart Schools Presentation 2022 What You Need to Have: Must-Haves: • Standard Workplace Kits: For offices, canteens, fleet vehicles, outdoor work areas, works depots, and community centres. Recommended: • Additional Kits: For private vehicles used for work and other high-risk areas identified through a workplace first aid assessment.
Minimum Number of First Aid Kits Required by Workplace Risk Rating:
1:50 1:25
Low-Risk Workplace: One kit per 50 people
High-Risk Workplace: One kit per 25 people
1:10
Remote High-Risk Workplace: One kit per 10 people
Every worker must have access to first aid equipment at all times.

Defibrillators and legislation Overview Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. It is a leading cause of death worldwide and immediate access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) significantly increases the chances of survival. St John SA can help your workplace prioritise workplace preparedness with the right training and equipment. Lifesaving legislation South Australia is the first state to introduce legislation mandating the placement of AEDs in work-places and public environments. The Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022 requires the installation and registration of AEDs in specific buildings, facilities, and vehicles, including schools, libraries, sports facilities, retirement villages, and larger commercial buidings. 5 References: 5 Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Bill 2022 Where you least expect it Kristine "Kris" Sims saved her husband, Andrew, when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while waiting for a ferry across the River Murray in South Australia's Mid Murray region. With no history of heart issues, Andrew collapsed after retrieving some fence posts. Kris called for help and retrieved an AED she had installed less than a year earlier. Using the AED and performing CPR, she managed to revive Andrew multiple times. He experienced three cardiac arrests that day. Thanks to Kris’s swift actions and the AED, Andrew survived and recovered.

Recommended AED model: LIFEPAK CR2
St John SA recommends the LIFEPAK CR2 model for council environments due to its superior features and ease of use. √ Fastest time to first shock √ Easy child-mode toggle switch (no separate accessories needed) √ Clear voice prompts and CPR guidance √ IP Rating: 55 √ 8-Year warranty √ Universal pads √ Fully or semi-automated
"I could have easily had the cardiac arrest anywhere, but having it there, at that time, with my wife there who had done first aid and also with a defibrillator on board, made me the luckiest person on earth on that day,." Andrew recalled. 6 This incident highlights the critical importance of having AEDs accessible in public places, especially in regional areas where medical help might be further away. By ensuring that AEDs are available, and that people are trained to use them, we can make our communities safer and better prepared for emergencies.

Solutions
Why Have an AED? • Increases Survival Rates: AEDs significantly boost survival chances during sudden cardiac arrest. • User-Friendly: Modern AEDs provide simple, clear instructions for non-medical users. • Quick Response: Early defibrillation is crucial—survival rates drop by 10% for every minute without defibrillation. Tips for Buying an AED • Check Expiry Dates: Ensure the battery and pads have a valid expiry date. • Automatic vs Semi-Automatic: Choose between fully automatic or semi-automatic models based on your needs. • Child Pads: If your workplace has children present, consider AEDs with child pads or pediatric settings.
