Overview Did you know that workplaces need to have a certain number of qualified first aiders? Low-risk workplace – one first aider for every 50 workers High-risk workplace – one first aider for every 25 workers Remote high-risk workplace – one first aider for every 10 workers It’s important for nominated first aiders to attend regular training to refresh their skills and knowledge, so they can provide effective first aid when needed. We recommend that first aiders receive refresher CPR training annually and renew their first aid qualifications every three years. First Aid Training

First Aid Training Overview First Aid Products South Australian councils are required to comply with Safe Work Australia’s minimum requirements for first aid equipment and facilities, just like with first aid training. This includes considering the safety of volunteers, contractors, subcontractors, and visitors at council premises. The necessary type and quantity of essential first aid equipment required for different settings can be found in Safe Work Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice. The specific type of first aid kits and additional modules needed will vary based on the type of work being carried out and the work location. Emerging issues The increasing availability of defibrillators throughout Australia is a valuable resource for individuals who experience sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting. In Australia, around 25,000 people experience this condition each year, with as few as 5% surviving to be discharged from hospital. 2 In South Australia alone, only 1 in 10 people affected by cardiac arrest survive. 3 The chances of survival drop by 10% per minute without access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), which is why having an AED available is crucial. 4

Defibrillators
9 SOLUTIONS Prioritising life: the value of defibrillators in your workplace Automated External Defibrillators are safe and easy to use by any person, trained or otherwise. St John SA has a broad range of models, and we can help advise you on which model will work best for your needs. The following model is recommended by St John for council environments.
Overview Anyone, anytime, anywhere can suffer from sudden cardiac arrest, even without any pre-existing medical conditions. It is a leading cause of death worldwide, and the only definitive treatment is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) shock. Prioritising workplace preparedness with the right training and equipment can increase the chances of survival in sudden cardiac arrest situations.
Speedy and smart: LIFEPAK CR2 Ideal public access defibrillator, or for vehicles, workplaces and offices • Fastest time to first shock • Easy child-mode toggle switch (no separate accessories needed) • Provides clear voice prompts and CPR guidance • IP (International Protection) Rating: 55 • 8-year warranty • Universal pads • Safe and easy to use by any person • Fully or semi-automated
Lifesaving legislation: SA leads the way
The South Australian Government has taken a momentous step towards safeguarding lives by passing the Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022, introduced by Hon Frank Pangallo MLC. 5 Under this legislation, public buildings and select private properties must install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), ensuring greater preparedness in the face of cardiac arrest emergencies. Schools, libraries, sports facilities, retirement villages, and larger commercial buildings are all included in this vital requirement.
VIEW LEGISLATION
Survival rates for cardiac arrest victims can be significantly improved with the presence of AEDs. St John SA stands ready to assist you in meeting these defibrillator requirements. Protect your community and demonstrate your commitment to safety, because every second counts.

Where you least expect it… In March 2023, a cyclist collapsed on a bike track travelling through the City of Onkaparinga Council. An off-duty SA Ambulance officer was alerted through the GoodSam app, and quickly retrieved an AED from Coromandel Community Centre. The responder was able to revive the cyclist with the AED and stabilised them until they could be transferred to the hospital for further medical attention. “We were informed that without an AED, the chance of surviving this incident was extremely unlikely. This is proof that the decision to invest and install defibrillators at key City of Onkaparinga sites was the right one.” said Moira Were, Mayor of City of Onkaparinga. Having readily available AEDs can be a lifesaver during life threatening emergencies. It provides peace of mind to community members, knowing their local government is prepared to act swiftly. Investing in AEDs is a critical step that councils can take to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents.

Emerging Issues
Is your workplace first aid ready?
Safe Work Australia’s First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice emphasises the importance of easy access to first aid equipment and sufficient training for personnel. 6 Shockingly, only 13% of employers meet these requirements, while just 31% of Australians feel confident in responding to a workplace first aid emergency. 7 Don’t leave it to chance. St John SA offers FREE workplace first aid assessments, restocking services, expert advice, and engaging drills. With our support, your workplace can achieve full first aid readiness and ensure the safety of your team.
