CHAIR OF THE BOARD’S REPORT

It gives me great pleasure to report a successful 2021/22 financial year for St John SA, both in the organisation’s contribution to the community and its financial performance. Whilst traditionally many organisations measure success through purely financial measures, I believe the most important measure of success for St John SA is the profound and unwavering community impact we continue to have on the South Australian community at large. The 2021/22 financial year saw us remain at the forefront of the first aid industry through providing first aid at events, training and products. Our growth in financial performance has allowed us to continue to provide these vital community services at the highest level while maintaining the quality of service that is synonymous with St John SA. Once again, our volunteers were kept busy year-round, covering an impressive 2,000 events, throughout which they treated 17,448 patients during their 45,298 duty hours. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and thanks to each and every one of our volunteers on this immense effort and sacrifice in order to support the South Australian community, and more broadly, our health system by reducing the burden on medical facilities throughout the state. The end of the 2021/22 financial year saw 48,149 public first aid course certificates delivered and over 330,000 hours provided of public and community training. It is comforting to know so many people in the community have received high quality, lifesaving first aid education from our highly trained St John SA Commercial Trainers. This high-quality training is part of our ongoing community impact to support the wellbeing of the wider South Australian community. In December of 2021, St John SA presented National Emergency Medals to volunteers who assisted during the 2019/20 bushfires. The awards were presented by Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia and Deputy Prior, St John Ambulance SA to 43 volunteers who volunteered their time and expertise during a national emergency. These amazing volunteers provided first aid care and support to those impacted by the fires and their communities. An amazing effort again by our volunteers who are always there for the South Australian

community in times of hardship and crisis.

each meeting and share information about St John SA including business updates and the future direction of St John SA operations. Concluding, I would like to extend my gratitude to the St John SA community. You are the heart and soul of our organisation. It takes a special type of person to willingly and generously devote their time and passion to helping others while simultaneously playing a significant role in advancing the mission and vision of St John SA. Thank you for the vital role you all play within St John SA and I look forward to working together towards an even stronger St John SA with even more community impact in 2022/23.

The St John SA Youth Development program also continues to prosper with 341 Cadet volunteers accruing an impressive 3,624 duty hours and 5,789 in training hours. A significant commitment was also dedicated to their education and continued learning with 90 proficiency certificates awarded throughout the year. These certificates assist our youth members in learning a range of important life skills to develop the tools, confidence and compassion to have a positive impact on the South Australian community. St John SA continues to provide an enjoyable, and engaging platform for youth members to contribute to develop key first aid, life and social skills whilst contributing to their community. I am also happy to report that the 2021 St John Ambulance SA Christmas Home and Lifestyle Lottery was successful for another year. A big thank you to St John SA staff members and to all of those from the South Australian community who showed their support by purchasing tickets. We are grateful that our annual Christmas Home and Lifestyle lottery allows us to continue to deliver our volunteer and community programs. This display of generosity is the reason we exist as an organisation and we look forward to being able to offer another rewarding campaign for the 2022 St John Ambulance SA Christmas Home Lottery. In relation to the Board composition, I am joined by a number of accomplished and knowledgeable professionals, and would like to take the opportunity to recognise their contributions to St John SA throughout 2021/22. We welcomed Shane Bolton to the Board as an Elected Director in November 2021, and Sef van den Nieuwelaar as Chair of Community Care in February 2022. I am extremely grateful for the knowledge, expertise and passion these professionals bring to the organisation and I look forward to working with all of them in the future. The Board were fortunate to be able to attend a number of Board meetings throughout the year at a range of our St John SA division centres around South Australia. We attended the Noarlunga and Mt Barker Centres and were thrilled we got to spend time with volunteers from the respective Teams. Being able to engage with and listen to member’s journeys enabled the Board and Executives to learn what motivates them to volunteer with St John SA. We were able to meet Leaders at

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

It is my pleasure to report on the activities of St John Ambulance SA over the past twelve months as we have slowly transitioned into the world we knew prior to the pandemic. I’m proud of the way St John SA staff, volunteers and members have continued working together to support the South Australian community during this time. Our valuable community impact for 2021/22 was made possible by our amazing team of 562 dedicated Event Health Services volunteers who attended over 2,000 community events, treating 17,448 patients and contributing more than 45,000 volunteer hours equating to a value of $3,506,010. The work of St John SA would simply not be possible without our dedicated volunteers and their impact of generously giving their time and expertise to the community simply cannot be measured in numbers alone. The St John SA Case for Change was implemented last financial year in order to address declining volunteer numbers and seek new opportunities across the organisation. I am pleased to report on the progress made within these areas with notable achievements including the appointment of the Director of Training, Katrina Hansen, and the launch of our e-Academy. We also released a new Code of Conduct and track new volunteer experiences. We have also appointed a Manager Event Volunteer Operations as we look forward to establishing an annual volunteer- focussed event in 2023. Another focus of our Case for Change was re-mapping of the Event Responder 22 course, and I am pleased to say we have recruited over 200 new volunteers. Our Community Care program continued to offer a variety of individually tailored services to South Australians at risk of social isolation. Over 330 clients were empowered to remain independent, continuing to be active contributors to their community. A notable achievement has been the trial of a new transport service within Community Care and planning for nationwide service changes. In February, St John SA installed a defibrillator at the Encounter Bay boat ramp following a series of serious medical incidents at this popular holiday location. This initiative was an idea proposed by St John SA initially with the objective of contributing to increasing the chances of survival of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in

South Australia. In cases of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, time is very much of essence; statistics show only one in ten people survive a cardiac arrest outside of hospital. By placing defibrillators in locations where large groups of people gather, lives can be saved which is why St John SA was thrilled to have teamed up with the Victor Harbor Council to bring lifesaving equipment to the Encounter Bay community. We aim to supply publicly accessible defibrillators to more council areas across South Australia in the future. implementing this plan, we hope to not only increase our corporate understanding of reconciliation, but build a personal journey of reconciliation for all St John SA people. One of our organisational values is diversity – and importantly it includes developing and maintaining our focus on reconciliation activities across everything that we do. Through this plan, we will strive to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and volunteering outcomes. At the centre of everything we do is our vision, mission, and values, which guide our charitable work in the community. The St John SA lotteries have seen ongoing success with two lotteries completed last financial year, including our tier one campaign, the St John Home and Lifestyle Lottery and our tier two campaign, the St John Autumn Cash Lottery. Thank you to all South Australians who purchased tickets in these lotteries. Our annual charity Golf Day was held in November, a key event in our fundraising calendar. The vital funds raised on the day go towards our First Aid in Schools program – training South Australian primary school children in lifesaving first aid skills. Our First Aid in Schools program continued to see increasing success with 21 schools involved, allowing us to train 4,183 students in First Aid over 5,228 hours. Our St John SA Golf Day would not be possible without our incredible sponsors and partners who play an integral part in supporting the lifesaving work that St John SA carries out every day. I would like to make a special mention to our Presenting Partner, Drakes for continuing their incredible support enabling us to undertake our ongoing charitable work within the South Australian community. St John SA rolled out our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) contributing to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through

I am incredibly proud to be leading an organisation with a clear vision for the future as we look ahead at what possibilities await us in 2022/23. I would like to acknowledge the outstanding team work of our volunteers and staff, and acknowledge them for their brilliant achievements. I would also like to say a special thank you to our sponsors and donors who assist us in continuing our work within the community. A huge thank you to my executive team and the senior management team who so ably lead our St John people. Lastly, I would like to thank the volunteer Board of St John SA for their generous input of their time and knowledge. I am proud to be part of such a high-achieving team making a difference to the lives of so many South Australians. I look forward to another exciting year, with St John SA leading the way in all things First Aid, training and social inclusion.

FIRST AID IN SCHOOLS

HELPING KIDS STAY SAFE AND RESPOND SAFELY TO AN EMERGENCY

The First Aid in Schools (FAiS) program is built on empowering children to recognise and act in an emergency. St John SA believe you are never too young to learn first aid skills that could mean the difference between life and death. Delivered completely free of charge, our FAiS teaches South Australian primary school children lifesaving skills to give them the confidence to act in an emergency. A qualified St John SA First Aid Trainer visits schools and tailors the program to suit the age group. Students learn how to recognise an emergency, how to call 000 for an ambulance, manage a range of basic injuries, deal with an unconscious person, and for the older students, how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Aligned with core competencies identified within State and National Curriculum, children can develop their skills over time. Teaching first aid also provides a useful introduction for those that are interested in joining the St John SA Youth Development program. Upon completion, students receive a gift bag with educational tools to help them continue their learning beyond the classroom.

St John SA is developing tomorrow’s leaders. Our Youth Development program includes everyday kids doing extraordinary things in the South Australian community. The program teaches first aid and a range of transferrable life skills to children aged 11 to 17 through various engaging activities. These life skills are important to help them develop the tools, confidence and compassion to contribute to the community in a positive way. SACE points and proficiency badges can be earnt along the way as they engage in a number of personal development and leadership opportunities through a range of fun camps and competitions. Once qualified, they can start attending a range of selected events and provide first aid to our community under the supervision of our highly qualified adult members. Since 1883, St John has been saving lives and empowering the community through first aid training courses and products. As the leader in first aid training in not only South Australia but Australia at large, St John offer a range of accredited and non-accredited first aid courses to suit all industries and skill levels. Ranging from basic resuscitation to advanced life support, and even various industry-specific courses, there’s a course to suit everyone. St John SA is an approved training provider with Safework SA and a member of the Australian Resuscitation Council. All first aid course content is regularly audited against requirements for the Registered Training Organisation governing body, Australian Skills Quality Authority. Here at St John SA, we stock an extensive range of first aid products, now from our very own online store that was launched in early 2021. All products are TGA approved and confirm to all applicable standards. Alongside our range of products, we also offer free restocking services for South Australian businesses. Our team will audit and replenish the contents of kits and guide the business through ongoing first aid compliance.

STRENGTHENING SA’S ABILITY TO PREPARE, RESPOND AND RECOVER FROM EMERGENCY

STATE EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Driven by community impact and as the key first aid providers within the State Emergency Management Plan, St John SA is focused on increasing the state’s preparedness, response and recovery capacity in the event of a State Emergency. As part of the Ambulance and First Aid Functional Service, we can readily mobilise responders to provide support to emergency services during times of disasters such as bushfires, floods, extreme weather events, and unprecedented events like the pandemic. We value the multi-agency approach the State Emergency Management Plan fosters for times of State Emergencies or disaster so that the South Australian community can be most effectively supported and protected.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

DISCOVERING, SHARING AND PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Our dedicated team of Historical Society volunteers work tirelessly to collect, manage, preserve and research artefacts that reflect the history of the Order of St John and St John Ambulance. Many of these elements are on display in the new Brighton St John SA Historical Museum, which is open for members of the public to enjoy. Coupled with the extensive knowledge our Historical Society volunteers have of St John, the museum is a treasure trove of St John international history and memorabilia that dates back to 900 years ago. Each year, a Historical Seminar is held where the St John Historical Societies across Australia gather and subsequently publish an annual journal. This journal holds a captivating record of the St John history that ensures these important stories and moments in time are documented for future generations to enjoy.

1 The updated volunteer dollar replacement hourly rate figure for 2021/22 is $46.62 per hour and was provided by Volunteering SA/NT. The basis of this calculation is taken from the biannual Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) average weekly earnings figures for Australia. This methodology follows Associate Professor, Dr Lisel O’Dwyer’s (previously Prof Duncan Ironmonger) approach to calculating a dollar value figure for volunteering, and is one of the calculations that forms the overall value of volunteering figure.

CHAIR OF OPERATIONS/COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

As I look back on the 2021/22 financial year, and as my first year serving as the Chair of Operations/Commissioner, I feel proud and fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend time with volunteers and members, working towards forming an even better volunteer experience. The 2021/22 financial year presented a range of exciting opportunities, as well as a number of challenges as a result of COVID. Needless to say, I am proud of how the St John SA volunteering team rose to the challenge and kept servicing the South Australian community, upholding their unparalleled level of high-quality service. St John SA remains the leading provider of Event Health Services in the state, and we have again invested significantly in training and reaccreditation to ensure that our members are skilled, confident and ready to perform their duties. There were a lot of events to keep us busy during the 2021/22 financial year with Schoolies, WOMADelaide, cricket, AFL, SANFL and the Christmas Pageant being attended by our Event Health Services team. We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong cohort of devoted volunteers who selflessly give their time to support the South Australian community. In the last year alone, our volunteers contributed an impressive 45,298 hours at 2,000 events with 17,448 patients treated. St John SA is incredibly appreciative and proud to have devoted volunteers making these numbers possible. These numbers further illustrate the substantial impact our Operations team has on the South Australian community’s health and safety. The event attendance and patients treated were not the only projects keeping our volunteers busy, however. They also managed to accumulate 29,906 training hours to ensure clinical skills and first aid best practice were maintained at all times. Additionally, 44,160 administration and support hours were contributed to assist with our volunteer programs running seamlessly. These administration and support hours are vital to make our community work possible. St John SA also commenced a review of the adult recruitment and retention strategy, looking at increasing adult member numbers. Further strategy and complementary marketing support will be developed and implemented during the 2022/23 financial Event Health and Medical Services

year in line with our goals and vision for member numbers in this space.

As we look to the year ahead, I look forward to the endless opportunities for St John SA and the chance to continue to share our positive impact with South Australian communities. Thank you to all the volunteers who selflessly give of their time for the benefit of the community, and the team of staff and Board members who provide support and guidance to allow the organisation to grow and evolve and better serve South Australians.

Emergency Preparedness

The 2021/22 financial year saw many of our Operations members actively contributing to fulfilling St John SA’s responsibilities under the State Emergency Management Plan by responding to callouts by providing Ambulance Surge Capacity. St John SA provided two ambulance vehicles with Registered Paramedics, Ambulance Officers and Patient Transport Officers during February and April 2022. Overall, we provided care to and transported 197 patients and travelled a total of 6,167 kms. Again, the high standard of skills and services that St John SA volunteers offer was required more than ever due to difficult circumstances for the South Australian community in times of State Emergency. With 341 Cadets and many dedicated adult volunteer leaders involved, our Youth Development program remains a priority under our Strategy 2025. The program had another strong year with our Cadet volunteers accruing an impressive 3,624 duty hours and 11,578 in training hours. A huge achievement and commitment to their education and continued learning with 90 proficiency certificates awarded throughout the year. State Competitions were held at Prospect Centre in August 2021 with Cadets from across the state competing for the state championship. St John SA Cadets competed in a range of first aid competitions showcasing their knowledge, resilience, humility, teamwork and ability to provide quality care under pressure. I first put on a St John uniform in the mid-1970s, and the organisation is a very different one now. However, what I do clearly remember from those days is the desire and commitment of St John members to make a difference, and I still see that shine through today. I have seen St John SA volunteers go from strength to strength with their commitment and resilience always paramount and I am proud to lead such a wonderful cohort of individuals. Youth Development
