VISION, MISSION, VALUES

St John SA is a charity working to save lives through education, training and patient care at events. Every year thousands of South Australians benefit from the care of our volunteers – whether it be at countless events across the state or in times of State Emergency, St John SA volunteers are always there to help. Our services span all age groups with our young people being taught both first aid and transferrable life skills, and the older and socially isolated members of the community being provided with companionship and support through wellness and reablement-focussed programs.

OUR MISSION To ensure wellbeing of all South Australians is improved through St John SA’s delivery of innovative, client-centred and evidence-based health, community and educational products and services. All our work is underpinned by a professional network of volunteers and staff.

2020/21: HOWWEHELPED

St John SA continues to impact the lives of South Australians through its multifaceted community services. From delivering first aid training and providing first aid services at events across the state, to our social inclusion activities through our Community Care and Youth Development programs, St John SA’s impact is diverse. We also play an important role in the State Emergency Management Plan, providing support to other emergency services in a first aid capacity. We are proud of the way our organisation has risen to the challenge of supporting our community during difficult times throughout the last financial year. All of our volunteers and staff, in both first aid and Community Care roles, have demonstrated their skill, care and compassion in their community work that has so richly benefited tens of thousands of South Australians.

volunteering figure. 3 Duty and training.

The 2020/21 financial year produced many successes; we formally commenced the implementation of our organisation’s 5-year Strategic Plan, our First Aid in Schools program was able to continue despite COVID-19 restrictions, and we were able to launch our new Training Hub, equipping both new and existing members with skills, knowledge and experience via high quality, standardised training. Our Event Health Services volunteers were kept busy despite the impacts of the pandemic attending over 2,000 events, treating more than 16,000 patients and contributing a collective $1,114,178 worth of volunteering hours. This is a significant contribution and not only benefited the wellbeing of South Australians, but also extended more broadly to our health system and community by reducing the burden on other medical facilities. Coupled with our Event Health Services volunteers’ impact at community events, Community Care staff and volunteers are continually adapting to a new way of providing services to suit the current climate whilst still delivering the key functions of the program; care, empowerment and connection. Well done to all Community Care volunteers for continuing to provide this important service and proving that social connection can be maintained while being physically distanced, ensuring that we continue to effectively assist the elderly and those at risk of social isolation. There has been significant work on maintaining properties, including the refurbishment of our Noarlunga Division Centre and the early stages of planning and scoping to update our Playford Division. These property upgrades are part of the metropolitan property strategy with these divisions doubling as public first aid training venues and represent the modern and innovative organisation St John SA continues to evolve into. I look forward to seeing future upgrades to divisions as the property strategy continues to roll out over the next financial year and beyond. CHAIR OF THE BOARD’S REPORT

Other highlights from last year include the installation of 104 public access AEDs across regional South Australia, the implementation of a new CRM for all St John SA members, and the new St John SA Mt Gambier Division Centre being opened in March, an integral asset to St John SA and the local community. The end of the 2020/21 financial year saw 40,621 public first aid course certificates delivered and over 300,000 hours provided of public and community training hours. It is extremely reassuring to know so many people in the community have received high quality, lifesaving first aid education from our highly trained St John SA Commercial Trainers, which will equip them to be able to utilise these skills in the case of an emergency. This high-quality training is part of our ongoing community impact to support the wellbeing of the wider South Australian community. The St John SA Youth Development program is going from strength to strength with our 396 Cadet volunteers accruing an impressive 1,130 duty hours and 8,433 in training hours. A huge achievement and commitment to their education and continued learning with 149 proficiency certificates awarded throughout the year. Beyond first aid, our Cadets learnt a range of important life skills that saw them develop the tools, confidence and compassion that will enable them to positively contribute to the South Australian community. St John SA continues to provide a fun, safe and engaging platform for youth to contribute to the community whilst developing key first aid, life and social skills. Another highlight for the year was the opening of The St John SA Historical Society Museum and Research Centre at the new location of 7 Arundel Road, Brighton. The official opening of the new centre was in May, after many months of hard work and dedication by our extraordinary Historical Society Volunteers, the museum was officially opened by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC KStJ, Governor of South Australia and Deputy Prior of the Order of St John in South Australia. The St John SA Historical Society has an impressive 26 dedicated volunteers who gave 2,995 hours of their valuable time throughout the year – what a fantastic achievement to all involved. The 2020 St John SA Christmas Home and Lifestyle Lottery was another huge success, thanks to the efforts from our staff members and support from all the South Australians who purchased tickets. We are extremely thankful that our annual lottery allows us to continue our volunteer and community programs and reminds everyone of the significant work we do and the services we offer to the South Australian community. These benevolent actions are the reason we exist as an organisation, making the community the ultimate supporters of our efforts.

St John Ambulance Australia SA Inc Annual Report 2020/21

I am privileged to be joined by a Board of highly skilled and experienced professionals, and would like to take the opportunity to thank and acknowledge their contributions. We welcomed Tony Mitchell to the Board as Treasurer in March 2021, Claudine Law and Ian McGeachie as Elected Directors in November 2020, Mandy Ford as a Co-opted Director in October 2020 and Hugh Grantham as Chair of Training in January 2021. I am extremely grateful for the knowledge and expertise these professionals bring to the organisation and I look forward to working with them all in the future. Lastly, a huge thank you goes to all our valuable members within our organisation; your perseverance and positivity day-to-day is inspiring. Without you, the work of this organisation simply would not be possible. Thank you for choosing to dedicate your time to improving the health and wellbeing of your fellow South Australians. I am extremely optimistic for the year ahead of us. If we continue to work together as a team, extraordinary things can be achieved. I look forward to working together in 2021/22 to create an even greater St John coupled with significant community impact.

Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum.

Karen Limb Chair of the Board

It is my absolute pleasure to provide a report on the activities of St John SA over the past twelve months. And what a twelve months it has been! The past two years have been unlike anything our generation has experienced, and while we continue to live with the impact and disruption of COVID-19, I’m encouraged to see the way in which our One St John has worked together to deliver such a strong impact in our community. I am proud of our organisation and everyone within it for contributing to a successful 2020/21, and weathering the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of living in a COVID-19 environment. Staff, volunteers and members have rallied together to continue to support the South Australian community and each other, with volunteers adapting to online methods of meeting and attending divisional training, while staff embraced working from home (often with very little notice). We all managed to find flexible ways to remain connected while continuing to support each other. Our volunteers have continued to care for the South Australian community during this global health crisis including our Event Health Service volunteers who provided coverage at events while also assisting with COVID-19 related activities. Our Community Care volunteers adapted their service provision and remained in contact with their clients through regular phone calls, video calling with loved ones, and when it was safe to do so, socially distanced visits. Our youth members took the new virtual reality in their stride and adapted activities and skill development modules to suit the new mode of learning. This past year reinforces that St John SA volunteers really are a remarkable cohort of dedicated professionals. Our valuable community impact for 2020/21 was made possible by our incredible team of over 597 first aid volunteers who attended 2,123 community events and contributed more than 49,000 volunteer hours. What we do in caring for sick and injured people of the South Australian community cannot be measured simply with a dollar value. The 16,854 patients treated by St John SA Event Health Services volunteers cannot fully quantify the impact our volunteers have on people’s day-to- day lives. CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT

Additionally, our over 300 Community Care volunteers provided connection and social support through companionship to almost 400 clients. I continue to receive positive feedback from our Community Care clients and their families - testimony to the services provided by our volunteers and the team of St John SA staff who work tirelessly to uphold this incomparable standard of service to the elderly and those at risk of social isolation within the South Australian community. The conclusion of the 2020/21 financial year also marked the completion of St John’s three-year project with the Australian Hotels Association SA and Clubs SA – Every Heartbeat Matters. An amazing 312 public access defibrillators have been installed at pubs and clubs around regional and remote South Australia through this initiative. Whilst I hope these defibrillators will not be required, I am comforted by the fact that should an emergency arise, isolated South Australians now have much greater access to lifesaving equipment. It is also encouraging to see the development within our property strategy, with 2020/21 seeing the near completion of our Noarlunga centre, incorporating spaces for operational and Community Care volunteers and clients to meet and engage. Scoping is also underway for the refurbishment of our Playford Division; a welcomed refresh for all volunteers who occupy this space. We also continued to receive wonderful support from our corporate partners, including our 2020/21 Presenting Partner, Drakes Supermarkets. This support had far-reaching benefits, helping us support our ongoing charitable work within the SA community. We continued our partnership with Freemasons SA & NT, enabling lifesaving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to be taught for free to 2,000 people through a three year, $600,000 grant. This partnership helps fulfil St John SA’s mission to ensure the wellbeing of all South Australians. Our annual Charity Golf Day is growing year-on-year and is a great example of how we continue to strengthen our mission and vision in the community. The 2020 Golf Day in November raised funds for our First Aid in Schools initiative, allowing us to train 1,826 students in First Aid, with 2,283 hours of training administered. I am extremely grateful to all of our sponsors and partners who share in our mission and vision and contribute to saving lives in South Australia. The St John SA Christmas Home and Lifestyle Lottery was a huge success for Christmas 2020. My thanks goes to all South Australians who purchased a ticket and showed their support through this exciting fundraising opportunity.

St John Ambulance Australia SA Inc Annual Report 2020/21

In November 2020 the Board launched the St John SA Strategic Plan – Strategy 2025 - which will guide us all over the next five years. St John SA is at a pivotal point in its development as a professional, skilled and highly sought-after health and community service. Strategy 2025 was co-created with volunteers, staff and other stakeholders and aims to ensure sustainable growth for St John SA over the coming years. Strategy 2025 is structured around five strategic pillars which reflects our organisational ambitions and include: • Educate – ensuring we are educating South Australians in a contemporary way, making sure they have the knowledge and skills they need as their priorities change. • Responded – responding quickly and appropriately when needed in the community. • Deliver – delivering new and innovative service models that assist the most vulnerable members of the community. • Invest – investing in long term strategies that both develop and support our charitable work. • Engage – engaging and retaining highly skilled and committed volunteers and staff to develop a strong, diverse and unified St John SA. Following on from Strategy 2025, I launched the Case for Change initiative in May 2021. This initiative is focussed on creating a new St John SA and direct us into a future that respects the past, lives in the present but with a strong plan for the future – and one that focusses on the role of volunteers and their experience. Since this launch event, many of you have been involved in consultations on where we are heading, and I look forward to rolling out the culmination of all this information in coming months. We have a busy few years ahead, but it is also going to be very exciting, with many opportunities for growth and positive change. I am excited to be leading St John SA at this pivotal time for the organisation and to advance our vision and mission through these clear strategic initiatives. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who have played key roles in the success of St John SA. In particular to: • Our volunteers, staff and members who commit their skills and talents to support the work of St John and deliver services throughout the year • Our management team who provide leadership across all of our people • My executive team of Steve, Kerry, John and Bruce who develop, implement, track, check, support, engage and focus our work • The Chair and the Board of Management for providing strategic governance of St John SA, and providing support to me.

As we all reflect on the past twelve months of service in the name of St John SA, I eagerly look forward to our change in the coming years and am inspired by Barack Obama’s words: Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. For the Faith and in the Service of Humanity

The St John SA Community Care program is focussed on creating a sense of purpose, enjoyment and meaning in life through support and companionship to the elderly and those at risk of social isolation in the community. Our team of passionate and dedicated volunteers are matched on a one-to-one basis to accommodate shared interests and goals to build an empowering volunteer-client relationship. The Community Care program centres its activities on wellness and reablement to allow for clients to retain independence and continue to live their lives in a way that is meaningful to them. With guidance and support by the Community Care team, volunteers create tailored activities with a view of activities to “do with” rather than “do for”. The past 18 months of COVID-19 has seen a range of adjustments and adaptations to the Community Care program, to ensure adherence to government social distancing and infection control guidelines. We are grateful to have committed volunteers who have found appropriate ways to ensure clients are connected throughout this difficult time and program objectives continued to be achieved.

FIRST AID IN SCHOOLS

The First Aid in Schools (FAiS) program is built on empowering children to recognise and act in an emergency. St John SA believe you are never too young to learn first aid skills that could mean the difference between life and death. Delivered completely free of charge, our FAiS program teaches South Australian primary school children lifesaving skills to give them the confidence to act in an emergency. A qualified St John SA First Aid Trainer visits schools and tailors the program to suit the age group. Students learn how to recognise an emergency, how to call 000 for an ambulance, manage a range of basic injuries, deal with an unconscious person, and for the older students, how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Aligned with core competencies identified within State and National Curriculum, children can develop their skills over time. Teaching first aid also provides a useful introduction for those that are interested in joining the St John SA Youth Development program. Upon completion, students receive a gift bag with educational tools to help them continue their learning beyond the classroom. After a tough year in 2020 with strong COVID-19 government regulations, FAiS is back this year teaching South Australian primary school children lifesaving first aid skills.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

St John SA is developing tomorrow’s leaders. Our Youth Development program includes everyday kids doing extraordinary things in the South Australian community. The program teaches first aid and a range of transferrable life skills to children aged 11 to 17 through various engaging activities. These life skills are important to help them develop the tools, confidence and compassion to contribute to the community in a positive way. SACE points and proficiency badges can be earnt along the way as they engage in a number of personal development and leadership opportunities through a range of fun activities and competitions. Once qualified, they can start attending a range of selected events and provide first aid to our community under the supervision of our highly qualified adult members. The Youth Development program is focussed on providing a fun, safe and engaging platform for young people to contribute to the community while developing first aid, life and social skills.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Driven by community impact and as the key first aid providers within the State Emergency Management Plan, St John SA is focussed on increasing the state’s preparedness, response and recovery capacity in the event of a State Emergency. As part of the Ambulance and First Aid Functional Service, we can readily mobilise responders to provide support to emergency services during times of disasters such as bushfires, floods, extreme weather events, and unprecedented events like the pandemic. Response in summer increased as we provided first aid support to firefighters on the frontline during the 2020/21 bushfires. We assisted in supporting the public through evacuations and at recovery centres, ensuring they had access to first aid and medical care. As we respond in times of crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic has seen St John SA aiding SA Health at COVID-19 testing sites. We value the multi-agency approach the State Emergency Management Plan fosters for times of State Emergencies or disaster so that the South Australian community can be most effectively supported and protected.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

The 2020/21 financial year has been an exciting year for St John SA Historical Society as Brighton became the new home for the St John SA Historical Museum and Research Centre. After hard work and dedication by our team of extraordinary Historical Society volunteers, the museum was officially opened by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC KStJ, Governor of South Australia and Deputy Prior of the Order of St John in South Australia. Our dedicated team of Historical Society volunteers work tirelessly to collect, manage, preserve and research artefacts that reflect the history of the Order of St John and St John Ambulance. Many of these elements are on display in the new Brighton St John SA Historical Museum, which is open for members of the public to enjoy. Coupled with the extensive knowledge of our Historical Society volunteers, the museum is a treasure trove of St John international history and memorabilia that dates back 900 years. Each year, a Historical Seminar is held where the St John Historical Societies across Australia gather and subsequently publish an annual journal. This journal holds a captivating record of the St John history that ensures these important stories and moments in time are documented for future generations to enjoy.

1 The updated volunteer dollar replacement hourly rate figure for 2020/21 is $45.10 per hour and was provided by Volunteering SA/NT. The basis of this calculation is taken from the biannual Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) average weekly earnings figures for Australia. This methodology follows Associate Professor, Dr Lisel O’Dwyer’s (previously Prof Duncan Ironmonger) approach to calculating a dollar value figure for volunteering, and is one of the calculations that forms the overall value of volunteering figure.

STATE SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

As I look back on the 2020/21 financial year, and as my last year serving as the State Superintendent for St John SA, I am extremely proud, privileged and humbled to have spent so much time with volunteers and members, working towards creating an even better volunteer experience. We have certainly experienced some challenging times as a result of COVID-19 and subsequent restrictions, however I am proud of how our members adapted to and upheld their unparalleled level of high-quality service to the South Australian community. Our adult and youth members alike quickly modified their ways of meeting and learning, ensuring their skills remained relevant, ready to respond to the needs of the community. Notwithstanding the challenges, we were also presented with some amazing opportunities throughout the year that our cohort of incredible members enthusiastically embraced. Even with the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, St John SA volunteers attended 2,123 events and treated 16,854 patients throughout 2020/21. St John SA is incredibly appreciative and proud to have dedicated volunteers to make these numbers possible, highlighting the substantial impact our Operations team has on the community’s health and safety. The event attendance and patients treated were not the only projects keeping our volunteers busy, however. They also managed to accumulate 23,615 training hours to ensure clinical skills and first aid best practice were maintained at all times. Furthermore, 35,098 administration and support hours were contributed to help our volunteer programs run smoothly; vital service to make our community work attainable. Event Health and Medical Services

Additionally, 2020/21 saw refurbishments commence at our Noarlunga Division centre, with a nice addition to the centre for Community Care volunteers and clients to meet and engage. Scoping and planning are underway for the refurbishment of our Playford Division, a welcomed re-fresh for all volunteers who occupy this space.

Emergency Preparedness

St John volunteers continued to support the community in times of State Emergency or disaster throughout 2020/21, specifically aiding SA Ambulance Service under the Ambulance and First Aid Functional Service – First Aid Functional Group, as part of the State Emergency Management Plan. The high standard of skills and services that St John SA volunteers offer was required more than ever during 2020/21 due to difficult circumstances for the South Australian community in times of State Emergency. As a result, our volunteers gave an impressive 21 days of their time throughout the year to support State Emergency response. I would like to personally thank each and every volunteer who generously gave their time and skillset to help our state through trying times. Our resilient cohort of volunteers put the health and safety of the South Australian community first during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when case numbers were increasing and further restrictions were being implemented. From temperature screening to assisting at COVID-19 testing locations, St John SA volunteers provided on the ground support to SA Ambulance Service and SA Health to keep the South Australian community safe. We have been fortunate in South Australia to have evaded many of the distressing repercussions of the pandemic and I thank the St John SA volunteers who played a part in the state’s excellent response to the public health crisis. This excellent response is a testament to the good work St John SA volunteers do and their dedication to learning and helping the community. Our Youth Development program had another strong year with our Cadet volunteers accruing an impressive 1,130 duty hours and 8,433 in training hours. A huge accomplishment and commitment to their education and continued learning with 149 proficiency certificates awarded throughout the year. We also celebrated the 2020 Awards Day in October, recognising Cadet’s achievements and contributions to St John SA. Well done to Junior of the Year, Jayla Nickless, Cadet of the Year, Nathaniel Sims, and Youth Leader of the Year, Emily Whyatt. Grand Prior’s Badges were also received by Alison Hanks, Samuel Shepherd, Hayley Spencer and Max Vincenzi. Congratulations to you all and a big thank you for your ongoing commitment to St John SA Youth Development. Youth Development
